Teeth Whitening Q & A

What causes stained and discolored teeth?

Several factors can cause discoloration and staining of your teeth. It’s typically a result of what you’re eating and drinking on a daily basis. The most common culprits include:

  • Berries
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Citrus fruits
  • Coffee, tea, and wine
  • Soda
  • Cigarettes and other tobacco products

The interiors of your teeth can also become discolored from trauma, illness, and certain medications. Interior discoloration usually can’t be fixed with traditional teeth whitening and sometimes requires a new crown to achieve a whitening effect.

What does at-home teeth whitening involve?

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has found that for the most efficient and safe whitening treatment, custom-fitted mouth trays created by your dentist are the best option.

Before the actual whitening process can begin, Dr. Cetel cleans your teeth and makes sure that there are no other existing dental problems, such as tooth decay or gum disease.

Next, he takes an impression of your teeth and uses it to create custom trays (also known as stents or custom bleach splints) that fit snugly around your teeth. This process typically takes a few days to complete.

Once the trays are available, Dr. Cetel provides you with the appropriate whitening material to use with your kit. He typically instructs you to wear your trays up to four hours a day for 1-2 weeks.

It’s normal to experience some sensitivity during or after the whitening process, and Dr. Cetel will provide instructions on how to proceed if sensitivity occurs.

How do I maintain my teeth whitening results?

Once your teeth whitening treatment has ended, there are several ways to maintain your new smile:

  • Avoid foods and drinks that cause tooth discoloration
  • Use a straw to prevent direct contact of liquids to your teeth
  • Brush your teeth twice daily with a tooth-whitening toothpaste
  • Floss daily
  • Avoid smoking and chewing tobacco

If you suffer from stained or discolored teeth and are seeking a brighter smile, professional teeth whitening could be right for you. Call or book an appointment online with Dr. Cetel for a consultation.
